Naan Bread

A perfect addition to a curry, or any other meal really, this naan bread is very easy to make and quick to cook. There is no yeast so it is doesn't take long to make at all.

You will need:

250g flour
120ml milk
a couple of tablespoons of oil
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar
Plus whatever you want to put on as a topping

In a big mixing bowl mix the flour, baking powder, sugar and salt. Make a well in the centre, add the oil and slowly start adding the milk by bringing in more and more flour from the side. Eventually you should have a smooth and soft dough, if it is too wet then add some more flour or if it is too dry add some more milk.

Knead this for about 10mins until the dough is like elastic, adding more flour as needed. After this, put the dough in a floured or oiled bowl and cover. Leave it somewhere warm for about 15mins.

At this point you should turn on your grill to make sure it is nicely preheated for when you're ready to cook the bread. Also put a baking tray under the grill to head up as well.

You can also prepare your topping now. In the photo below I used garlic but you can use anything you want really, seeds (fennel and cumin would be good), coriander/cilantro...just use your imagination.

Now take the dough and make balls out of it, this recipe should make 4-6 depending on how big you make them. Roll them out quite thinly and sprinkle your chosen topping on top, then press in to the dough.

Place the dough on the preheated baking tray and put under the hot grill for a couple of minutes, you should keep an eye on it because they can burn very quickly. The hot tray should cook it from underneath and the grill will cook it on top.

When it is ready, brush some butter on the top and serve!

Here is what mine looked like, they were soft and fluffy inside, lovely:

There are loads of variations you could try with this recipe. For example, you could make stuffed naan bread by rolling the dough out, adding the filling, fold over and then roll out again. For this you could use, potato, coconut, mooli or anything else you have.

  14. Have you tried this with the no knead bread recipes? I have made a Pita using the no knead, but it doesn't have any oil in it so That may be the difference. I really enjoy Naan, but always end up buying it because I don't know how to make it.
